Golmaal, the new one….. will take a status of classic in the history of Indian cinema. Can Rohit Shetty, the man behind it create the magic again? Can he weave the comic mystery web to perfection? Can he deliver the promise which he has given the audience to present the best comic thriller ever? Can such 2 distinct genre be combined effectively?
Movie starts with a high profile murder and shows up characters in the movies (used later) standing in the crowd watching the dead body which stuck on the bank of the river. The murder creates a ripple in the media and across the nation. Ayesha takiya is a dubbing artist who gives voice for animation films. She also has habit of forgetting small things like keys, mobile, etc here and there. She and her friend who is designer (however in a conversation Ayesha says “apani RJ to ab chalu ho gayi”) goes to a party at on Saturday night. They meet some bad boys who try to get close with them. They get rid of them using their brains and then enjoy the party (dancing on not so cool music).
Next day when Ayesha wakes up due to door bell. When she sees the milkman has dropped 2 packets of milk, she is amazed. She also goes to return her DVD to dvdshop but its closed and “Monday Closed” board is there. Also her friend ask her how can she forget their plan of monday movie watching. To add to her confusion, a taxi driver (Arshan Warsi) and a struggling actor (Irfan Khan) are behind her for 420 rs. She does not remember why they ask her 420 rs.
To add to her misery, she is attacked by some goons by multiple times. She seeks police help and Ajay Devgan handles her case. Ajay Devgan is the inspector who is not so honest. But he is in love with Ayesha and wants to impress her and also help her. While checking out the facts, he understands that she does not know what has happened between Saturday night and monday morning. She has one forgotten day in her life…. a day is missing from her life…. Sunday.
How Ajay solves the mystery, is the story of Sunday.
The director takes almost 40 mins to establish the characters and the plot by which time we are totally exhausted mentally. However once the plot is established and the movie is into comic mode, things speed up and we get a funny roller coaster ride. The mystery is properly woven with the comic tracks however the greep is missin in first 40 mins and last 30 mins. That is a big downer for this movie.
Performance wise Arshad Warsi steals the show and Irfan Khan competes equally. Both shall be seen together often. Arshad proves that he is today’s baap of comic timing and Irfan is king of characterization. Ayesha Takiya delivers solid performance but shall do something about her dress sense. Her friend, Anjana Sukhani is more presentable than her in the movie. However, acting wise she is good and impresses in the introduction scene where she is dubbing voice for animation film. Isha Deol in surprising guest appearance is treat to watch. All other cast members support properly.
Music has nothing to mention. No single song is worth remembering. Cinematography is breathtaking. Delhi is shown as never before on screen. Script is week at some points but dialogs make up for it. The Delhi tone dialogs, dialects, language is fun to hear and is something refreshing than the regular mumbaiyaa lingo.
Overall, this could have been a good movie but manages to be above average. Can be watched once with group of friends who can make up for the dull moments in the movie.
BR Rating: **1/2
BR Verdict: Above Average
BR Advise: Watch it for Arshad, Irfan and Delhi.
