A struggling actor,VK (Ranvir Shorey) who is busy in his life giving auditions, working as extra, dubbing for animation films. One evening he is witness to a brutal unsuccessful murder attempt of the city Don, Raje (Ranvir Shorey). He runs away from it but when he goes to police station, he is noticed the one goon. As he looks same like Raje, he is kidnapped by the gangsters to be polished as Raje and planted in the Raje Gang and family (DON again?).
The plan is conceived and executed by Gawade (Nasaruddin Shah) who is brain of the gang. VK is taken care by Sonam (Neha Dhupia), who is also a small time actress and current babe of Gawade. VK and Sonam develop a special bond between them while the training to act as Raje. Gawade has his man Nafis planted in Raje Gang as key person of raje. They send voice and photos and video of Raje for VK’s training material.
After this finishing schools over, Raje is killed and VK is sent as Raje in Raje gang. VK who is now playing Raje’s character in real life manages few days there but doesn’t feel very safe there. He meets Sonam again in a Dance bar. There some fight happens and Nafis tries to rush to VK to take him back. However VK in his fears goes backwards and falls from the 3rd floor on the ground.
Bone-broke VK is taken by Raje family to hospital. But he gets amnesia (Bollywood’s most loved accidental problem) and looses his memory. What happens after that? Does he fit in the Raje Family?Does he get his memory back? What happens after that? You can watch Mithya, if you need these answers which one may or may not get. Let’s me know with your comments.
Brilliantly executed Bheja Fry Director, Rajat Kapoor is again the in driving seat. He is back with his team of Ranvir Shorey and Vinay Pathak. This time, he does not act and concentrates totally on direction. To be fair to him, he had a great idea at his hand which is developed fairly well but fails flat in pace and climax front. He sure excels in storytelling and does shoot truly to life sequences close to reality. Watch the scenes with Raje’s kids. He is able to keep the child artist to what do they best…. be a child.
The script (Saurabh Shukla, Rajat Kapoor) is complex and hard to execute but keeps us engaged, we keep waiting for something surprising to happen but it does not. The climax of the movie is a big let down. It may be logical to the story writer, script writer and the director but it fails to lift the movie above certain limits.
As Bheja Fry was exemplary movie of Vinay Pathak’s talent, this movie is showcase of Ranvir Shorey’s talent and he does not disappoint us at all. He sure is a great artist and is an asset to our industry. Neha Dhupia plays her part well. She is given retro look many times and she looks good in that. Vinay Pathak is apt in his role does it freely. Nasaruddin Shah looks impressive and does his job fine. Saurabh Shukla is ok. All other cast performs well. Performances can be said as good point of this movie.
There are no songs in the movie but the background music is classy. The production values are good and cinematography is excellent.
The movie is combination of comedy, thriller and suspense genres. It engrosses you through its journy but fails to elevate to a higher level. That is the biggest flaw of the movie. But yes, its different and has great performances.
BR Review: **1/2
BR Verdict: Above Average
BR Advise: Mithya is a good idea which fails to come to some exciting and refreshing conclusions. But has good performances and some exciting and suspense. If you have fair for suspense and something different, go watch this movie.
